As a young girl growing up in Holland I wanted to be a test pilot so I could make sure that the planes were safe to use; or a deep sea researcher so I could find out things that would help preserve the oceans; or a flight attendant so I could make your trip comfortable. Of course, along the way in these careers, I imagined I would be travelling and visiting many different places on earth.
Instead I emigrated to Canada and became a chartered accountant.
As a chartered accountant I was able to be very useful to people and companies as I cleaned up inefficient processes; saw solutions to difficult problems and worked to implement them in a way that got everyone working alongside; I continued learning and gathered a bunch of additional credentials in risk management, in coaching and in other people-oriented disciplines. I designed and delivered training courses. I taught at universities. I worked as team leader on teams tasked with sorting out difficult processes. I was an executive, in charge of enterprise risk management, business continuing management and other functions. I was part of a C-Suite and worked with a Board. I did travel — to Asia, Europe, America, the Caribbean, and within Canada. Exactly what my young self wanted.
As I am now an ‘elder’ I contribute my knowledge, skills and experience back into society. I help small businesses become more efficient, resilient, and great places to work. I coach their owners/leaders, I streamline processes, and I help staff with communication skills, time management skills and self management skills. I also coach folks in the corporate world and I volunteer coach with Up With Women, an organization that does work I care about. I sit on a corporate board for an organization that works in the arena of protecting vulnerable parts of our society. I still want to make things better. And I still like variety. And I still like to travel.
When you are looking for a coach who gets you, who can hold space for you, who can support you no matter what challenges you are facing or have faced, who wants to walk next to you as you become your better or best self, reach out — unless you try you will not know. I know what it's like to be in the business world, and I know what it's like to have to find your way again in the world after a significant or traumatic event.
